From Building to Testing

Speed can get you started, but understanding is what helps you build well.

By Rudo Mudzingwa and Sisi Nxumalo

Welcome to the third edition of the Kini Journal.

As always, we want to start by saying thank you for being here, believing in us and pouring into this journey by helping us shape what Kini is and what it can become.

In the few months since we began building Kini, we’ve come a long way. What began as a problem we were trying to understand has now become a product we can put into the hands of real families. And man, does that feel exciting.

This month, we reached an important milestone:

We built the first version of the Kini web application.

And now, we’re ready to start testing it.

From Idea to Application

Building a product has taught us a lot about the difference between having an idea and actually bringing it to life.

AI has played an incredibly important role in helping us explore ideas, create, iterate and move much faster than would have been possible before.

But we’ve also learned an important lesson:

AI is only as useful as the knowledge guiding it.

Without a clear understanding of what you’re building, how the technology works and what good looks like, moving quickly can sometimes create more problems than it solves.

We experienced some of this ourselves. Once we had built the first version of the application, we brought in an experienced developer to help us restructure and strengthen it. Their work has given us a more robust foundation to take into testing.

It has been a valuable reminder that moving fast and building well are not always the same thing.

Sometimes, slowing down is what allows you to move forward properly.

Now We Test

We’re now moving from building to testing.

Our first round will be with a small group of families who have been part of the Kini journey and have generously shared their experiences with us from the beginning.

We want to understand how they use the application, what feels intuitive, what doesn’t and, most importantly, what we haven’t thought about yet.

We don’t expect everything to work perfectly. We’re looking for honest feedback that will help us improve the application and prepare for our next stage, the beta phase.

From there, we’ll continue refining the product before moving towards our pilot.

Building the application is an exciting milestone, but what matters most now is what we learn when real families begin using it.

The Support Has Meant So Much

One of the most encouraging parts of this journey has been the support we’ve received from people around us, some we know personally and others we’ve never met before.

The willingness of families to share their stories, give feedback and now test what we’re building has meant so much to us. It gives us confidence that we’re exploring a problem that genuinely matters.

More importantly, it means Kini isn’t being built in isolation. Real families and real experiences are influencing what we build and how we think about it.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of the journey so far. We’re incredibly grateful to have you with us.

Until next month,
Rudo & Sisi, Co-Founders, Kini
